Plastic packaging 2030

Market innovation / circular plastics / plastics littering

In Europe the existing linear economy is progressively being restructuredinto a circular economy. Plastic products play a particular role in this context since they are being used in every sphere of life, whereas there are clear restrictions to their circular use in particular with regard to products with a short live span such as packaging.

In January 2018, the European Commission published its communication "A European strategy for plastics in a circular economy". The plastics strategy, among others, promotes the aim that by 2030 all plastics packaging placed on the EU market should be either reusable or can be recycled in a cost-effective manner. The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia supports the goals of the plastics strategy as it opens up pathways towards a better integration of plastics into a circular economy.

North Rhine-Westphalia boosts an important plastics industry and at the same time is the location of relevant actors in areas such as the retail sector, research and development and waste disposal. In the context of the event representatives of industry, research and politics will discuss the contributions from North Rhine-Westphalia to date and in the future towards a circular plastics economy. A particular focus will be on the needs in research and development in the coming years in view of achieving the goals of the European plastics strategy.
